doodle of the day: henna inspirations

Today's doodle is inspired by Indian culture with its bright colours and elaborate henna designs. I'm still hopeful for a little Bollywood infusion when I get married next year! I just love all those colourful suits and saris, and if I had my way, every guest at our wedding would be wearing one. hahaha. even the guys... even the guys.

This little lad is a tiny bit delusional, but full of well-intent. Plus, even though he seems prepubescent, he's got rock-hard muscles and a six-pack as sturdy as wood... the signs of a real man.

Good Morning Starshine!

Today was one of those monthly Saturdays where we were called into work again. I must say it was a highly productive day for me. For one thing, I drew this doodle... recognize the quote?

 Good Morning Starshine, the Earth says Helloooooooo!!!

Willy Wonka says it in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (the Tim Burton version). It's one of my favourite quotes because it doesn't make any sense. haha.

Also, my coworker and I had a drawing challenge where we had to draw something with the theme "FAIRYTALE FIGHT" with a time limit of 30 minutes. I think we both spent the first 15 minutes thinking up overly-ambitious ideas then ended up scrapping them and coming up with something shoddy in the last 15 minutes. I think my artistic self-esteem was lowered with my failed attempt but here it is anyway. HAHA. I suppose it's not really a "fight" since the evil red ridinghood has somehow scheduled the impending doom of the poor wolf by way of brick clobbering, but I tried... haha. What a morbid interpretation, right? This image is pretty SAD... in more ways than one.

...and speaking of Little Red, here's another random doodle I did a few weeks ago. At first, the speech bubble for the cupcake was blank so I asked my coworkers to give fill in a quote, and one of them suggested, "I've lost my cherry".

So apparently I'm a pretty sheltered person and I didn't find out til later that that phrase meant losing your virginity. HAHAHAHAHAHA. So once again, another fairytale has been given sketchy undertones.

Really though, I'm pretty sure that all fairytales are secretly twisted and dark. Go read some of them again (the ORIGINAL versions) and you'll find that they're not really stories for kids...

... today I also received a little surprise in the mail that made up for everything else that went wrong in my day... a beautiful bird drawing of my very own!!! LOVE IT. This one's a keeper! (so is the drawing)... haha.

snowflakes in spring

My uncle's maid grew up in Indonesia, and she had a totally different upbringing from me. We speak different languages but we try to understand one another through conversing in broken Cantonese. I never had a maid or helper around the house growing up, so to me, she's a newfound friend. Yesterday, we talked about each other's families and faraway homes, and I showed her some of the doodles from my sketchbook. Later, she came back with a snowflake she had just cut out of paper. We spent the next half an hour cutting paper snowflakes out of old Indonesian magazines. My snowflakes turned out weird (I'm not very good at making pretty ones), but I really liked hers so I posted them up. Then I got the idea of making a little wall mural and reverted back to what I'm comfortable doing - doodling of course! So I drew a little cartoon girl to complete the wintry scene that we taped onto my uncle's wall. haha. 

After that, I was feeling in a creative + poetic mood so I started thinking up snow metaphors which led me to writing a HAIKU poem... (Do you remember having to do those in elementary school? haha)...

haha that's my sad adult Haiku attempt. I'm sure my Grade 6 self could've done better.

Oh and I also made a poem about snowflakes using every letter of the alphabet in order. Just because I felt like it. It gets weirder at the end, but to me it still makes sense. =P

albino bits of cake deliriously, endlessly falling. gusts of heaven-sent ice-cream just kissing the lids of mountains. nymphish opalescent petals, quietly reeling. starlights twirling upon velvet watercolours like xeric yeast-zits.

...here's a notebook cover I collaged recently using a free Valentine's-themed food flyer that I picked up and some paper scraps. I didn't make this collage specifically for Valentine's but it still turned out pretty sweet... (the bad jokes never cease)... that's why you keep on coming back, am I right? haha.

...and of course, I have to re-introduce you to one of my old doodles... since it's most fitting...

life lately

What have I been doing lately? I've been doodling on the blank covers of notebooks, sighting fat little birds everywhere I go, and hanging out with one of my favourite people for the short time we were together in the same part of the world. 

I'm back to work on Monday, but for now, I'm taking full advantage of the remaining few days where I get to sleep in until 4pm. (just kidding)... or am i?...

love + friendship is all i need.

Remember the bird doodle from THIS post? Well, with my friend's iPad, my doodle was digitally transformed with random app effects and it looks totally different from my original sketch. Then, I added two quotes that I like about love and friendship - dedicated to Randolph and to all my friends who are far away! =)

 I like how the sepia-toned + friendship quote turned out... I feel like printing it out and framing it somewhere. It would make a good poster on my blank white wall!

strawberry jelly ice-cream

Here's another mindless doodle inspired by this jellyfish I got from Ocean Park. I always thought it looked like a strawberry ice-cream scoop. Her name is Gummy by the way, and she misses her blue counterpart, Jell-O who is currently living overseas.

By the way, I know the giant tissue paper pom-poms in the back are hideous but I'm still experimenting because I intend to make a whole bunch to hang in my room. I'll show you when I finally succeed in making less demented-looking pom-poms! =)
