off to the races!

Here's an adventure that I was in the middle of blogging about but forgot to post halfway. A couple weeks ago, I went to the Hong Kong Jockey Club (in Happy Valley) to watch the horse races for the first time. Horse racing is huge in HK so even though I'm definitely not a gambler (although I do have a love for BINGO - I'm such a grandma right?), I thought it would be interesting to tag along with my other two Canadian friends and see what the hype was all about.

It was a huge stadium with a whole tonne of people. Obviously, there were all these gung-ho horse racing fanatics who actually had memberships and could afford the box seats. Us commonfolk just paid $10HK to get in and watch from ground level (where all the other tourists were). haha. Apparently though, if you bring your passport along with you, you can actually go and get better seats up-top with something called a "tourist ticket".  

My friends actually ended up betting money and both of their horses won. Beginner's luck! One of the best parts of the night for me though was eating a giant FOOTLONG HOTDOG and getting SPARKLY PURPLE BOWTIES! Since it was Easter, I kept on seeing people at the stadium walking around with either a purple sequined bowtie or furry white bunny ears (all these European guys were walking around with beers + bunny ears. you might spot a couple of these real-life playboy bunnies in some of my photos below ).

Anyway, I really wanted a bowtie so I tracked down the booth where I thought they were selling them. But unfortunately they were all out of bowties. I was walking away with a depressed face when suddenly I saw this guy holding a whole bag full of the purple bowties!!! I instinctively pointed at the guy and probably yelled a slightly toned-down version of "WHOA!!! THERE THEY ARE!!! ATTACK!!!" The guy saw my overly-excited face, and gave me four bowties for free, probably so that I wouldn't harass him. That totally made my night. HAHA. I love free stuff.

After the races were over, we took the TRAM to a nearby ROOFTOP LOUNGE called Wooloomooloo Steakhouse where we had drinks surrounded by a gorgeous 180-degree view of Hong Kong. I didn't try the food but I would just go for the view. If you're in the Wan Chai area, I would definitely recommend that place to visit at least once!

Okay enough nonsensical narrative. Here comes the PICTURE ONSLAUGHT!

Isn't the view gorgeous? Aside from my occasional complaints about the poor air quality, the stifling pollutant smog, and the heavy humidity, Hong Kong is such a beautiful city. =P

Today I randomly came across a painting that I almost forgot I painted. It's from a long time ago (I don't even remember when) but I love it when I find old artwork like this, especially when it involves burgers!!

For this painting, I used acrylic paints and black sharpies to outline the characters (not a good idea by the way. the sharpies were basically rendered ineffective after being used on this canvas). I've been looking at some other paintings where artists use thick black lines in their work as well, and I realized many of them use something called India Ink. That's one medium I haven't used before but would like to try.

... and while I'm in a hungry mood (it's 12am, I'm getting ready for bed, yet my stomach is raging for McDonald's)... here are some awesome products for all you burger fanatics out there (or just for my own guilty greasy pleasure).

I would definitely wear this sweater. In fact, I would like to make a burger costume this Halloween.

DIY: fishtail dress

Hello stranger!

I haven't blogged in two weeks!

That's because I just got back from the most relaxing two weeks I've had this year. Much needed vacation time. I will update with photos later but right now I'm trying to get into a "back-to-work-on-Monday" mindset, although it's really not working. I went to Singapore this past week, and I did pack that DIY fishtail dress I altered recently. It was the perfect outfit to prance around shamelessly in. 

I know some of you requested pictures of the final product so I scoured my vacation photos for some pics of the dress. Uploading these photos also brings me to this depressing moment where I mourn the end of my vacation time. haha. =(

...the best part of the whole vacation was being reunited with the fiance, Mr. Potatohead... at least for a short while. (3 months til THE PERMANENT REUNION!!!). Man... I commend anyone who has been in a long-distance relationship, because it's tough knowing such a big part of your life is 10,512 miles away!

DIY: lace blouse + fishtail dress

I recently posted about 10 ways on how to style a plain blouse with black lace here. Well, in the end, I ended up deciding on going with option #11, which is slightly different. I cut off the middle flap of the blouse so that the black buttons that were underneath could be visible. Then I sewed the two lines of lace down either side of the buttons. I think this shirt would go best tucked into a pair of high waisted shorts which is probably what I'll be wearing in SUNNY SINGAPORE next week (CAN'T WAIT!!!)...

Afterwards, I searched online to see if there were similar styles, and I found these... complete with severed heads, how lovely.

So anyway, since I'm going on vacation this coming week, I'll probably be on a blog hiatus for a bit. But I'll take pictures and fill you all in on the adventures later. For now, here's another quick DIY idea: it's a dress that I revamped today (from a straight-edged skirt into an assymetrical fish-tail skirt) that I'll also be bringing with me on holiday. I intend to frolic and prance in this on the beach in... FOUR DAYS!!! (Can you tell I'm excited?!?!) haha...
